IP68 Connectors for Street Lighting & Smart City

Purpose-built for outdoor LED drivers, light poles and smart controllers — Zhaga / NEMA-compatible power plus DALI / 0-10V dimming interfaces that survive rain, UV, salt fog and pole vibration for 10+ years without re-work. From driver-to-module inside the luminaire to pole-base mains and rooftop sensor hubs.

Field Challenges

Street lights don’t fail indoors — they fail on the pole

A luminaire may pass IP66 in the lab and still leak, corrode or rattle open after two winters on a coastal highway. The connector is the weakest gasket — these are the four failure modes YXY circular series are engineered against.

Rain & condensation

Wind-driven rain at 80–100 km/h, pressure washing and daily thermal breathing (55°C day to 8°C night) pump humid air into non-sealed joints. Water wicks along stranded wire into the pole base and driver cavity — tripped breakers, flicker, shorted drivers.

YXY answer: IP68 radial seal plus coupling O-ring, optional potted overmold — 1.5 m / 24 h submersion mated, IPX9K wash-down.

Corrosion

Coastal salt fog, de-icing chloride and industrial SO₂ attack plated steel contacts in 48–96 h; brass pins oxidize and contact resistance climbs toward thermal runaway. Galvanic couples at dissimilar-metal junctions corrode fastest on the pole.

YXY answer: Gold-plated copper contacts, 316 stainless / nickel-plated brass coupling — 96 h salt spray per IEC 60068-2-52.

Vibration

An 8–12 m pole sways ±150 mm in wind; passing trucks add impulse gusts. Bayonet and push-fit joints work loose, contacts micro-fret and throw intermittent DALI faults. Threaded rings loosen further through thermal cycling.

YXY answer: Quick-lock quarter-turn plus secondary screw retention with anti-vibration ratchet — tested to EN 61373.

UV chalking

Up to 1,200 kWh/m² of UV per year chalks and micro-cracks non-stabilized nylon housings; the cracks become water tracks after Year 3 and expose live pins within 18 months on cheap ABS shells.

YXY answer: UV-stabilized PA66 V-0 shell, carbon-black + HALS package — 1,200 h xenon-arc with under 15% tensile loss.

Recommended Series

Four connector systems cover the whole pole

Mix and match per your luminaire, pole and controller architecture. All four share the IP68 sealing philosophy, UV-resistant PA66 shells and one crimp-die family, so crews standardize once for the whole project.

Field Installation

Why quick-lock matters

Maintenance crews work at height, in gloves, often at night — every extra minute on a cherry picker costs money and safety exposure. A street-light joint should close in one motion and prove itself sealed by sound, not by torque wrench.

  • Quarter-turn bayonet mates and seals a joint in about 10 seconds — push, quarter-turn, click.
  • Audible and tactile click confirms the radial seal with gloves on; no torque tool, no tape.
  • Blind-mating key prevents cross-mating power vs DALI dimming circuits in the dark.
  • One crimp-die family across LP16 and LP20 — a 15-minute crew briefing, not a training day.
  • Overmolded pigtails arrive pre-terminated: no exposed copper anywhere on site.

Timed trial: two electricians, 8 m pole, night shift — Shenzhen pilot, 120 poles. Across 200 poles the quick-lock section saved roughly 4.5 hours of lift time; a single luminaire re-work (truck, crew, lane closure) runs $180–$400.
