Where It Fits

Where YXY micro connectors live inside the device

Not the mains inlet — these are the 3–8 wire links between sensor head and mainboard, battery dock and handheld, consumable cartridge and reader. Failure shows up as intermittent readings, not a tripped breaker, so contact stability matters more than ampacity.

Diagnostic & imaging peripherals

Ultrasound probes, ECG/EEG lead hubs, pulse oximeter pods, dermatoscopes, intra-oral scanners. 4–7 contacts carry micro-volt sensor signals, 5V bias and shield. The cable flexes thousands of times; the connector must hold less than 10mΩ drift after flex. SP11 threaded micro with strain-relief overmold prevents cable-break artifacts.

Portable & wearable monitors

Portable ECG, Holter, infusion pump handsets, CPAP hoses, wearable SpO₂. The 08mm YM08 or Push-Pull breakaway is preferred over threaded — one-handed blind mating, 200g retention, no cross-threading in gloves. Low mating force of 4–8N with an audible click.

Lab & IVD benchtop analyzers

Blood-gas, PCR, immunoassay, centrifuge lid interlocks, liquid-handler heads. The connector sits behind a drip tray — it needs an IP65 front seal and rear potting-friendly solder cups. 1.5A per pin handles valve and solenoid pull-in; gold plating prevents fretting from lab vibration.

Therapy & sterilization-adjacent

Electrosurgical handpieces, endoscope processors, dental scalers, autoclave-adjacent docking trays (wipe only). The shell must survive daily 70% ethanol, isopropanol and quaternary ammonium wipes. Smooth nickel-plated brass with LSZH overmold — no paint to flake. Not implantable.

Scope note: YXY supplies device & instrumentation interconnects — probe cables, docking, internal harness — not active implantable or Class III direct patient-invasive connectors. Materials are industrial-grade biocompatibility-adjacent (see compliance below), not ISO 10993 certified for implanted contact. For skin-contact handles we recommend an overmolded cable exit and recessed contacts.

Design Requirements

Design requirements that kill generics

Medical handles are measured in grams and millimeters. A “waterproof IP68 outdoor” connector is usually too big, too stiff and too rough. These are the gates a medical micro connector must pass before it ever sees a BOM.

RequirementYXY micro spec — why it matters clinically
Compact envelopeØ8–11mm mating, <18mm cable OD. Fits 20–24mm probe handles and 38mm IVD cartridge slots without crowding the thumb grip. 0.75mm thread pitch for short engagement.
Contact finishGold 0.2–0.5µm over nickel 1–2µm on copper alloy. Keeps contact resistance <5mΩ initial, <10mΩ after 500 cycles and 40°C/93%RH. Prevents the fretting oxides that masquerade as sensor drift.
Current / voltage1.5A / 50V DC per pin (30V AC), 0.5A derated at 4-pin. Covers 5V/12V auxiliary, RTD/thermistor bias and 12V solenoid/valve peaks. 500V AC dielectric, >1000MΩ insulation.
Durability≥500 cycles (SP11/YM08), 1000–5000 for Push-Pull metal. A ward device mated 4×/day × 250 days = 1000 cycles/year. Tested per IEC 60512-9a, ±10µm wear on gold.
SealingIP65 (wipe-down) to IP67 (splash/drip) mated. Silicone O-ring + rear grommet. Survives daily ethanol/quat wipes and a 1m drip. Not IP68 submersion — the unmated side is not sealed, so keep it behind the drip tray.
Temperature & cleaning−25 to +80°C operation, PA66/metal shell. Withstands 70% ethanol, isopropanol and CaviWipes-type quats. No autoclave (134°C steam) — specify stainless + glass-seal if needed.
MechanicsPush-Pull 4–8N mate / 8–15N unmate; threaded 0.15–0.25Nm. 15° blind-mate chamfer with mis-mate prevention key. Cable flex >5000 × 90° at 50mm radius.

Test conditions: 20°C, 45%RH, 1.5A load, 2mΩ lead compensated. Derate current 20% for 6+ pins bundled. IP ratings per IEC 60529, mated with a YXY cable assembly; panel-cutout tolerance ±0.05mm.

Envelope & handling — the hidden spec

  • Weight: 2.1g (YM08 panel) / 4.8g (SP11 cable) — the probe stays neutral-balanced.
  • Mating length: 15.5mm YM08, 19mm SP11 — no knuckle-bump on dense panels.
  • Glove test: the M14 knurl works with 6mil nitrile; the YM08 snap works with double-gloving.
  • Cable OD: 3.2–4.5mm PUR/TPU — soft touch, drag under 40g on neonatal probes.
  • Color: nickel/black shell, white/blue insulator — no black carbon near optics.

Signal integrity notes from field returns

  • Twist pairs for ECG/EEG: 2× twisted + drain — use the 5-pin (4 signal + shield) Push-Pull 5B.
  • Keep the unshielded pigtail under 18mm inside the handle — cuts 50/60Hz pickup by roughly 8dB versus 40mm.
  • Ground pin first-mate / last-break on Push-Pull: pin 1 is 0.3mm longer.
  • Overmold with 35A shore TPE at the cable exit: passes a 1.2m drop onto steel and a −20°C crack test.

Also available — panel & cable done as a system

We ship the pair, not just the shell — so the seal actually works:

  • Panel side: nut + O-ring + anti-rotation flat, PCB solder cup / right-angle / crimp, optional rear potting cup.
  • Cable side: pre-wired 0.3–2m PUR/TPU, shield drain terminated, 35A TPE overmold, custom length and labeling.
  • Adapter: SP11 to YM08 pigtail for legacy analyzer retrofits — no panel re-cut.
  • Fix: use the YXY mated pair; mixing with generic M8/M12 risks a 0.15mm pin offset and a resistance jump.

How we quote medical micros

  • MOQ 50 pcs per pin count (10 for evaluation) — medical programs start at 50, not 1,000.
  • Samples in 5–7 days, with 2D + STEP + contact layout, all on one lot so your verification is not a lottery.
  • Panel cut DXF + keep-out included — no handle interference.
  • Batch code + date on the shell; COC with contact resistance and IP lot test.

Compliance

Biocompatibility & compliance — plain language, not copy-paste

These are not implantable connectors. For handles, benches and docking — where the user wipes down daily and the patient touches only the overmold — here is what we do and what we don’t claim.

Materials & skin-contact notes

  • Contacts: C3604/CuSn copper alloy, gold 0.2–0.5µm over nickel 1–2µm. No cadmium, no cobalt binder. Low nickel exposure — the contact tip is gold-covered; the shell is not skin-worn.
  • Shell: HPb59-1 brass with bright nickel 5–8µm, or PA66-GF for the insulated panel. No latex, no phthalate plasticizer in standard PUR/TPU cable.
  • Insulator: PPS / LCP, UL94 V-0, CTI >175, glow-wire 750°C. White/blue through-color — no paint near the fluid path.
  • Seals: silicone VMQ O-ring, −40 to +180°C, compression set <15% at 70°C.
  • Overmold: halogen-free TPE 35A, skin-touch tested; cytotoxicity report on request for the TPE lot, not for the metal shell.

Not claimed: ISO 10993-5/-10, USP Class VI, or ISO 13485 system certification for the connector itself. If your device needs that lineage, we supply the material lot CoA + plating thickness report for your file — and can build to your certified overmold compound.

Regulatory & lot paperwork — what ships with the box

  • REACH & RoHS: fully compliant, SVHC <0.1% per current candidate list, lead-free solder cups, Cr(VI)-free plating. REACH/RoHS declaration per lot + SGS on file (annual).
  • UL: insulator resin UL94 V-0, file E* on request; the connector is component-level, not a UL-listed end device.
  • Traceability: laser lot code on shell, date code on bag; COC with 4-wire contact resistance, insulation and IP sample test (AQL 1.0).
  • Plating audit: gold thickness 100% XRF-sampled, not batch-averaged — min 0.2µm, typ 0.35µm on SP11, with a nickel barrier against copper migration at 85°C storage. Report ships in the bag.
  • PFAS note: no PTFE on standard seals or cables; PTFE-free BOM available for PFAS-restricted tenders.

Cleaning compatibility (wipe-down, not submerge)

  • Validated wipe: 70% ethanol / 70% IPA, 5 min dwell, 500-cycle micro-crack pass.
  • Common quat wipes: benzalkonium & didecyl dimethyl ammonium (CaviWipes-type) pass with no stress cracking on the shell. Nickel may show a faint rainbow after repeated quat — functional, not corrosion; rinse with DI water if cosmetics matter.
  • Not for: autoclave 121–134°C steam, gamma >25kGy, or prolonged soak. For those we quote glass-seal hermetic or 316L stainless builds separately.
  • Wipe-friendly geometry: the SP11 knurl is 0.5mm-pitch fine diamond (one-stroke wipe), Push-Pull metal has no knurl at all, and the panel O-ring sits behind the bezel so fluid runs off, not into the PCB cavity. PUR jacket swells <3% in 70% IPA and stays flexible at 4°C.

Wipe-Down & Reprocessing

Design for the cart, not the autoclave

In wards and labs, connectors are wiped between patients, not autoclaved. The failure mode is creeping residue in a knurl, then a sticky mate that a nurse forces — bending a pin. We design to avoid that, and we document it for your IFU.

RuleWipe-down & handling guidance
DoDaily wipe with ethanol/IPA or a quat wipe, 30s dwell, soft cloth. Mate with the YXY cable only; replace the cable if the O-ring is nicked.
DoCap unmated panel connectors with the YXY dust cap when on a wet bench — keeps spray out of the contacts.
Don’tAutoclave, soak in glutaraldehyde, or ultrasonic-bathe the assembly — fluid wicks into the insulator.
Don’tMate with saline on the pins — wipe dry first; salt crystals raise contact resistance by 50–200mΩ.

Reprocessing note for your IFU

If your device IFU requires a cleaning instruction for the connector, we supply a one-paragraph wipe procedure you can paste — validated chemicals, dwell and dry time. Not a sterilization claim: a cleaning compatibility note for non-sterile accessories. Ask for the “YXY Medical Wipe Note EN-2025”.
